Some corals are particularly light-sensitive, making them difficult to image. In this case, darkfield imaging has been used to reveal the non-autofluorescent coral tissue in the Northern Star coral (Astrangia poculata), a species with no intrinsic fluorescence. Non-fluorescent tissue (cyan) and dinoflagellates (magenta) are combined in the image.
