Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and soon spread across the globe, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic and a worldwide health emergency. To date, more than 48 million cases have been reported globally and the disease has resulted in more than 1.2 million deaths.

The development of reliable and robust tests, capable of detecting active or previous infection with SARS-CoV-2, is essential for the effective diagnosis, tracking and treatment of COVID-19.
