Invitrogen, a division of Life Technologies, has announced that it has received the AmeriStar® Package Award from the Institute of Packaging Professionals for its new GIBCO cell culture bottle.

Invitrogen launched the redesigned GIBCO bottle in October of last year to offer scientists improved ease of use, efficient storage and reduced sample contamination for cell culture experiments.

The bottle is the result of three years of collaborative research and development; that involved testing more than 30 prototypes; between Invitrogen, global design consultancy IDEO and container manufacturer Graham Packaging Plastics, which helped develop the manufacturing plan for the innovative bottle design. The end result was a redesigned bottle that provides improved ergonomics for “under-the-hood” workflow, superior handling and storage, easier identification and additional space for supplements.

“This honor recognizes our corporate commitment to customer-driven innovation,” said Todd Laird, Vice President and General Manager of the Invitrogen Cell Culture Essentials business unit. “After extensive observation of scientists conducting cell culture workflow experiments, our team developed a new solution that resulted in a true breakthrough in user-centric design, transforming the way scientists work.”

AmeriStar evaluated more than 100 packages in 15 different categories, with the GIBCO bottle receiving honors in the medical device category. A formal awards ceremony will take place on May the 19th, as part of the IoPP Annual Packaging Summit in Chicago.
