Expression Pathology Inc. has announced that an article in the November issue of Molecular and Cellular Proteomics has reported feasibility of cancer biomarker detection in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue using mass spectrometry.

The article, Proteomic Analysis of Formalin Fixed Prostate Cancer Tissue by Brian L. Hood, SAIC-Frederick, Inc./National Cancer Institute, et al., describes LC MS/MS mass spectrometry analysis of FFPE prostate cancer tissue processed by EPI’s Liquid Tissue MS Kit that identified over 1,000 proteins in histologically distinct micro-dissected regions.

A broad range of known and recently discovered protein biomarkers of prostate cancer and hyperplasia were shown to be identified.

The methodology described in the article enables the power of mass spectrometry to be applied to vast archives of FFPE tissues and to accurately correlate protein expression to histological information and clinical outcomes in a broad range of disease conditions.
