Waters Introduces Molecular-Imaging-Enabled MALDI Mass Spectrometer

Waters Corporation has introduced a configuration of its MALDI Q-Tof Premier™ mass spectrometer incorporating a 200-Hz solid-state laser and advanced software, enabling scientists to perform molecular imaging experiments.
This capability is also available as an upgrade for scientists using the Waters® MALDI Q-Tof Premier mass spectrometer and will allow for improved mass accuracy and up to a 10-fold improvement in sensitivity.
Molecular imaging by MALDI allows researchers to visualize the distribution of molecules in tissue samples - alternative experimental procedures to gather this information have been complex and expensive and have involved the use of radioactive labels with radiography and positron emission tomography (PET).
Waters claims that, using a cost-efficient means that combines MALDI mass spectrometry and advanced imaging software, scientists can track the distribution of more molecules earlier in the discovery process than by other techniques.
Applications for the technology include small molecule analysis, proteomics, and metabolite identification.
The configuration is expected to be available on MALDI Q-Tof Premier units during the third quarter of 2006.
