What Is Proteomics?

Proteomics is the large-scale study of all the proteins produced by an organism or system. Proteins are vital parts of living organisms, with many functions. The proteome is the entire set of proteins that is produced or modified by an organism or system. Unlike the more static genome, the proteome is highly dynamic and changes based on biological context, cell type and time. Proteomics has enabled the identification of ever-increasing numbers of proteins and has helped researchers better understand cellular activities, cellular processes and disease mechanisms.
