Fast and Accurate Identification and Antibiotic Resistance Profiling of Microorganisms in Blood Cultures by SWATH DIA Proteomics

Fast and Accurate Identification and Antibiotic Resistance Profiling of Microorganisms in Blood Cultures by SWATH DIA Proteomics content piece image

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sepsis is responsible for one in every five deaths worldwide. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of great concern in the context of bloodstream infections (BSIs) when it evolves into sepsis.

AMR evaluation is still based on growth tests in the presence of an antibiotic, which negatively impacts the diagnosis turnaround time. With the aim of streamlining this turnaround time, the DIA-MS sensitivity and specificity performances were evaluated to concomitantly provide the identity and antibiotic resistance profile of pathogens related to BSIs based on peptide surrogates.

During this talk, Iulia will present her research about:

  • How DIA-MS sensitivity and specificity perform to identify a pathogen and determine its antibiotic susceptibility profile
  • The potential for ultra-fast microorganism identification in blood cultures
