Alie de Boer, PhD profile page

Dr. Alie de Boer is an associate professor of nutrition and food information at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. She holds a BSc in nutrition and health from Wageningen University and an MSc in health food innovation management from Maastricht University. Boer completed her PhD at Maastricht University in 2015 in nutrition, toxicology, and EU food law. She is the founder of the Food Claims Research Centre, a hub for interdisciplinary research on functional foods and food law. Dr. de Boer's research focuses on the generation and use of scientific evidence in food policy and legislation, and its implications for food safety, nutrition, and the sustainability of food systems. She employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating nutrition and food science, law, and policy studies to examine the role of risk analysis in food governance, with a particular interest in the use of new approach methodologies (NAMs) in risk analysis. Through her work, she aims to support fair, safe, healthy, and sustainable food choices by ensuring that food information is accessible, understandable, and rooted in science. She is a member of the Dutch Association for Food Law (NVLR), the Dutch Academy of Nutritional Sciences (NAV), the European Nutrition Leadership Platform (ENLP), and Young TPI. Her areas of expertise include risk analysis, European food law, nutrition, food safety, new approach methodologies, food information, and food labeling.
