Professor Jonathan Hirst obtained his BA in chemistry from Oxford University in 1990 and he received his PhD from London University in 1993, with Dr. Michael Sternberg at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Following appointments as a postdoctoral researcher and subsequently an assistant professor at The Scripps Research Institute, he was appointed in 1999 as a lecturer in computational and theoretical chemistry at the University of Nottingham. He was promoted to Professor in 2004 and in 2020 was awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. His tenure as Head of School (2013-2017) saw some significant transformations under his leadership, including the building of the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory and a successful bid for an Athena Swan Silver Award. His research focuses on the application of computational chemistry to challenging problems in chemistry and biology, spanning a wide range of topics from the quantum chemistry of small molecules and the spectroscopic properties of proteins, to drug design and sustainable chemistry.
