Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been the technique of choice for deep and quantitative analysis of proteomes. However, until recently, the characterization of these proteomes was represented by the bulk analysis of many thousands to millions of cells. Only recently have the approaches and instrumentation afforded characterization of peptides from hundreds to even just a single cell.
