Seul Kee Byeon obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from University of California Irvine and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yonsei University, South Korea. She did her postdoctoral fellowship in Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 2022. She has more than 13 years of experience in LC-MS-based lipidomics and she has oriented her career towards clinical research for biomarker discovery and mass spectrometry-based assay development. She has developed and applied untargeted and targeted lipidomics to find lipid biomarkers of various diseases including genetic disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, pancreatic cancer and she is expanding her research scope by taking multi-omics approach to discover diagnostic and predictive signatures of diseases. At the newly established lab called Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, she is also developing lipids-based mass spectrometric assays that can be transferred to clinical labs for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases.
