Clinician Scientist
at Goethe University Frankfurt, Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology
Dr. Tobias Bexte is a clinician scientist dedicated to developing novel strategies that enhance the natural functionality of immune cells – harnessing their therapeutic potential for incurable diseases. His research focuses on cutting-edge gene editing approaches, including innovative non-viral chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) technologies and advanced CRISPR-editing, enabling the precise and safe editing of immune cells such as primary natural killer (NK) cells. Dr. Bexte conducts his research and clinical work at Goethe University Frankfurt and the DRK-Blutspendedienst Baden-Württemberg – Hessen. He received his medical training at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Completing his doctoral thesis in the laboratory of experimental immunology and cell therapy. Currently, he is a visiting scientist at the Charité Berlin, where he focuses on pioneering the next wave of CRISPR-technologies to strengthen the immune system’s natural capabilities. In recent years, Dr. Bexte has driven the development of novel protocols for precise immune checkpoint gene editing and played a key role in establishing non-viral Sleeping-Beauty for CAR NK cells. He also co-founded and co-leads the NextGen Transfusion Medicine network, bringing together young clinicians and scientists from national and international institutions to shape the next generation of leaders in transfusion medicine.
