The winning image (Americas) in the Olympus Image of the Year Award 2019 shows the inside of a tardigrade, also known as a “water bear”. Despite their plump and arguably cute appearance, tardigrades are extremophiles, resilient to some of the harshest conditions in water environments around the world.
