The winning image (Americas) in the Olympus Image of the Year Award 2019 shows the inside of a tardigrade, also known as a “water bear”. Despite their plump and arguably cute appearance, tardigrades are extremophiles, resilient to some of the harshest conditions in water environments around the world.

Satellite data reveals how rapidly and markedly the harmful compounds polluting our atmosphere drop off when humanity grinds to a halt. The ongoing pandemic lockdown highlights just how much our industrialized areas contribute to air pollution problems, but what lessons can be learnt?
Whilst the world waits for an effective COVID-19 vaccine to be developed, approved and made available globally, pharmaceutical companies are working in parallel to establish if existing approved or experimental drugs have the potential to be repurposed to treat patients infected with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. In Technology Networks' latest list, I highlight some of the ongoing drug discovery efforts, and take a closer look at the drugs currently undergoing preclinical and clinical development for COVID-19.
