Understanding 'Disease Mechanisms' of ALS
Researchers are making strides in understanding the disease mechanism of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. They recently found that ubiquitin eliminates droplets of Ubiquilin-2 (UBQLN2) in solution. The discovery is noteworthy because UBQLN2 is a protein-encoding gene, mutations to which cause ALS and various types of dementia.

A New Class of Glass
Lightning and volcanos both produce glass, and humans have been making glass from silicon dioxide since prehistory. Industrialization brought us boron-based glasses, polymer glasses and metallic glasses, but now an international team of researchers has developed a new family of glass based on metals and organic compounds that stacks up to the original silica in glass-forming ability.

Antigen Study Shows Promise for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccine
Medical researchers have been trying to develop a vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for more than 50 years, without success. New findings however, point to a promising route for designing an effective vaccine. Researchers determined the atomic structure of RSV G (major viral surface protein) and identified two sites on it that are targeted by protective antibodies effective against a broad range of RSV strains.
