Hippocampus cells in the dentate gyrus subregion that express channel-rhodopsin in an activity-dependent manner. These cells in green were involved in storing a fear memory, which are a fraction of cells present in the dentate gyrus (blue). In red are cells that are active during the retrieval of that fear memory as well. Researchers can use these cell groupings to measure whether or not the encoding and retrieval of a memory elicits activity in similar or different cellular populations.
