Microbe Motility Enhanced by Microbiome Metabolites in Colon Chip

Human colon epithelia are much more prone to be damaged and detach from the surface of a colon epithelial channel in a Colon Chip when exposed to enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in the presence of human microbiome metabolites (Hmm) compared to mouse microbiome metabolites (Mmm). The columns present the surface areas of intestinal luminal channels that are covered by human colon epithelial cells (yellow areas), which were lost (blue areas) much more extensively after exposure to EHECs together with Hmm than to when exposed to EHECs together with Mmm.
