Sony Acquires Microfluidic POC Firm Micronics
Sony has announced that it has acquired microfluidics-based diagnostic tools firm Micronics for an undisclosed amount.
The deal was done through Sony's wholly-owned US subsidiary Sony Corporation of America and is expected to accelerate Sony's own R&D work in the point-of-care space and to hasten commercialization of Micronics' products.
Founded in 1996, Micronics develops near-patient in vitro products for disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring.
Last year, it received a $2.6 million grant from the US Department of Defense for the development of its PanNAT system for point-of-care molecular diagnostic testing of infectious pathogens.
Micronics will remain headquartered in Redmond, Wash., where it will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America. Its current management, including President Karen Hedine, will remain with the firm.
"[W]e at Micronics aim to make full use of Sony's superior consumer-based technologies, product development capabilities and capacity to distribute products globally in the development of Micronics' products," Hedine said in a statement.
