Partial characterization of Plasmodium falciparum protein kinase ABCK2 (PfABCK2)
PfABCk2 gene is ligated into pET21a+ vector with His-tag at C-terminus and transformed into BL-21 (DE3) competent cells that are verified through Miniprep and DNA sequencing. Furthermore, this gene construct is utilized to heterologous express this protein with IPTG and afterwards purified the recombinant protein kinase using nickel affinity chromatography as shown on 10% SDS-PAGE with the expected 36 kDa protein band.

Novel Role of the Innate Immune DNA Sensor IFI16 (Interferon Gamma Inducible Protein 16) as a Major Epigenetic Modulator During KSHV Infection and Lytic Reactivation
Studies have shown that IFI16 acts as an antiviral restriction factor against a number of DNA viruses, by inhibiting viral replication or transcription through epigenetic modifications. However, till date, no specific epigenetic function of IFI16 has been identified. Here, we have discovered that IFI16 recruits two histone methyltransferases on the KSHV episome leading to altered Histone H3K9 methylation, thus regulating its lifecycle.

MRSA screening for surgical site infection prevention prior to hysterectomy at a cancer center
We demonstrate that implementation of a bundled protocol can improve MRSA screening rates in a cancer center population. We find that MRSA is a rare cause of surgical site infection in this setting.

Long Term Outcomes of Liver Transplantation in the Direct-Acting Antiviral Era of Hepatitis C
There are no reports of long term outcomes of Hepatitis C (HCV) liver transplant (LTx) recipients in the direct-acting antiviral (DAA) era. We aimed to examine impact of DAA’s on survival, examine the populations at risk, cure rates, and long term outcomes.

Liver Transplantation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Outperform Other Populations in the New Hepatitis C Era
Long term results of HCC liver transplants (LTx) in the recent era of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) against hepatitis C (HCV) are not available. We aimed to examine the access, treatments and cure rates with DAA’s utilized in HCC LTx with HCV. Secondarily, we aimed to determine the long term impact of the Liver Cancer Program and DAA therapies on survival of HCC LTx.

Internet-Based Biomarker Collection Feasibility: Experiences of a Tobacco Cessation Program for People Living with HIV
This project introduces video-conferencing as a method for biomarker collection in research and will explain how biomarker collection via video-conferencing was implemented in a pilot ehealth intervention.

Identifying Asthma-related Health Disparities Among Children in Hillsborough County
Our project was to identify a geographic area demonstrating need for asthma interventions. By identifying different factors such as air quality, prevalence, asthma related hospitalizations and emergency department visits, we created a tool to identify and prioritize areas that could benefit from interventions like patient education and certification as an Asthma-Friendly School.

From Farm to Landfill: Results of a Campus-Community Awareness Event to Promote Sustainable Food Systems
In April 2017, a campus-community event (N=42 participants) was held to promote sustainable food systems by educating participants about concepts ranging from food production to nutrition and food waste management. This poster discusses the resulting increased awareness and knowledge of a our local food system among participants, which can be fostered through educational events that combine opportunities for research, teaching, and practice.
