Using a simple three-step process, LBSI researchers obtained aspect ratios greater than 50:1 with straight sidewall features in devices that exceeded 1 mm in depth and channel widths less than 100 microns. Channel widths as narrow as 10 microns can be fabricated depending on overall channel depth requirements.
This advancement represents one of the highest aspect ratio etch ever obtained in glass and is produced using an inexpensive UV exposure, bake, and wet etch batch process. This innovation allows the production of precise and accurate 3-D microstructures with the complete benefits of glass versus plastic—chemical inertness, optical clarity, consistent surface chemistry, and mechanical advantages for products like microfluidic devices.
Early users predict that this advancement will usher in a host of new microfluidic and life science applications. In addition, the capabilities of the APEX™ glass substrate enable production in a high volume batch process while promising devices at price points typically reserved for lower quality plastic parts.
