Immune cells inside the body need to make their way through densely packed tissues, squeezing through gaps and finding the most efficient route.

During metastasis, cancer cells may make use of a similar type of locomotion.

Now, experiments reveal how the cells probe different paths and use their bulky nucleus to gauge the size of gaps.
